The company entered into binding agreements to acquire Northvolt’s assets and all remaining Northvolt intellectual property.
On 7 August, Lyten announced that it had entered into a binding agreement to acquire Northvolt’s remaining assets in Sweden and Germany, following a series of strategic moves to absorb key components of Northvolt’s global operations.
In November 2024, Lyten acquired Northvolt’s Cuberg lithium-metal battery manufacturing facility in California, followed in early July by the announcement of its acquisition of Northvolt Dwa, a battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility located in Gdansk, Poland.
The acquisition is expected to close in August 2025. In late July, Lyten further expanded its portfolio by acquiring Northvolt’s BESS product and IP portfolio. These acquisitions firmly place the company in the lithium-ion battery space, having previously focused solely on lithium–sulphur technology.
Lyten plans to immediately restart operations at Northvolt ETT in Skellefteå and Northvolt Labs in Västerås, Sweden, upon closing the transaction. The company is also reopening discussions with Northvolt’s former customer base.
At Northvolt Dwa, Lyten intends to recommence production to support its BESS product line, with shipments targeted for Q4 2025, and eventually convert production lines to lithium–sulphur technology, in line with market demand.
At Northvolt Drei in Heide, Germany, Lyten is collaborating with Northvolt and the German government to continue developing a large-scale battery manufacturing facility. The initial phase aims for a production capacity of 15GWhpy by 2028, with Northvolt having planned to scale this capacity up to 60GWhpy.
Lyten has also expressed its intent to acquire Northvolt Six in Quebec, Canada. The facility is currently under construction and is designed to deliver 15GWhpy of cell production capacity in Phase 1, eventually scaling to 60GWhpy. Integrated with cathode active material production (90ktpy capacity) and recycling infrastructure, Northvolt Six is a key asset in the North American battery supply chain.
Nevertheless, Lyten will need to overcome Northvolt’s operational shortcomings—including supply chain bottlenecks, technological lag, and weakened market demand—to restore confidence in the Western battery industry.
